This period love film is a combination of epic poetry and comedy, pictures taken from silent films and the melodrama of Estonian cinema's "golden age".

Helmi was born in Baron Strandmann’s house in the old town of Tallinn in 1908. All she knows: her mother was an Estonian maid. It will take her a lifetime to learn about her family’s secrets. She experiences joy and passion as well as sorrow and disappointment. Major historic events leave their traces on both the house and its inhabitants. In turbulent times, stability can be found in the cinema hall, and the cinema mechanic Julius’s quiet love for Helmi.
